MiraDry for Excessive Sweating, Frequently Asked Questions
If you struggle with excessive sweating, you already know how impactful this condition can be. Hyperhidrosis, the clinical name for excessive sweating, has a profound effect on a person’s self-confidence. Fortunately, advanced technology and a product called miraDry have the answers you need.
What Is miraDry?
The miraDry device is an FDA-approved treatment for excessive sweating. It was created for the treatment of excessive axillary hyperhidrosis, which is excessive underarm sweating. Also, in 2015, the FDA approved miraDry as an option to permanently eliminate underarm hair and odor glands. When miraDry is used for hair removal, it’s usually called miraSmooth.
How Does miraDry Work?
miraDry is a handheld device that delivers noninvasive, precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the skin under your arms. The result is that the sweat glands undergo a heat-induced decomposition called thermolysis. As the sweat glands are eliminated through this technology, the skin’s top layer is protected and cooled.
Is It Safe to Not Sweat?
While sweat glands are essential in keeping our bodies regulated and cool, our bodies have millions of sweat glands. However, some people experience overactive underarm sweat glands, which can lead to excess sweating. When you treat your excessive sweating with miraDry, it means that the sweat won’t accumulate in just one area of your body.
Do the Sweat Glands Grow Back?
In most cases, the underarm sweat glands don’t grow back, so your results will be lasting and immediate. Occasionally, a patient may need two procedures, which are typically done three months apart.
How Long Does the miraDry Procedure Take?
The miraDry procedure takes about one hour to complete, and it’s performed at your dermatologist’s office.
Does miraDry Hurt?
Most patients experience little or no discomfort during the miraDry treatment. Your dermatologist will administer lidocaine injections (local anesthesia) before performing the procedure. After your appointment, you can use over-the-counter pain medications. Also, ice packs can provide comfort if your underarms are tender after treatment.
What Should I Do Before miraDry Treatments?
Before your miraDry procedure, don’t put on antiperspirant or deodorant. However, you do need to shave your armpits. Be sure to wear a comfortable, loose-fitting sleeveless top such as a sports bra, tank top, or camisole
Who Shouldn’t Have the miraDry Procedure?
If any of these applies to you, consult with your dermatologist before considering miraDry treatment:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Your skin forms keloid scars.
- You have an active infection.
- You have hidradenitis suppurative or cysts.
- You have significant surgical scars in the area of your underarms.
- You’re allergic to lidocaine with epinephrine.
- Your underarms have been injured by radiation.
- You have a pacemaker or any other electronic implant.
- You’re currently taking Accutane or have taken it in the past six months.
