5 Easy Ways to Help Control Your Teen’s Acne
Does your teen have acne? Acne is one of the most common skin conditions among adolescents and adults! At Clarity Dermatology, we customize each patient’s acne regimen in order to promote clear skin and help your teen put their best “face” forward! Below are some things that you can do at home to help control your teen’s (or your own!) acne!
1. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Does your teen have small acne bumps or blackheads on their forehead, back and around their hairline? It may be smart to stop and take a look at the ingredients in your teenager’s shampoo and conditioner, because products containing Moroccan or argan oil may be a culprit in causing acne!
2. GIVE YOUR OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS TIME TO ABSORB
Over the counter products with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are great products to use at home! Many patients do not feel they are effective; however, they often can be very helpful if used correctly! When using these products, it is important to let these products sit on the skin for 2- 3 minutes before washing them off. This allows the medication to soak in and act on the acne. If you wash it off immediately, the medicine will not have time to do what it is designed to do!
3. START SLOW WITH YOUR RETINOL/TRETINOIN PRODUCT
It is really important to start slowly with these types of products. There may be nothing worse for your teen than having acne covered by dry, flaky skin! Talk about adding insult to injury! Have your teen start using the retinol/tretinoin product in combination with moisturizer, apply every other night and work up as tolerated! It’s also important to avoid overapplying these products to sensitive areas like the corners of the nose.
4. DO NOT WAIT FOR ACNE TO START SCARRING
Get one step ahead of your teen’s acne and go see a dermatologist before they start scarring! If you are in doubt about how severe your teen’s acne is or could become, it is always better to err on the side of caution and have a professional help evaluate and treat the acne! It is much easier to treat acne than it is to treat acne scarring. So, to save everyone some stress and money, find the right treatment for your teen before they start getting acne scars.
5. BE PATIENT WHEN TREATING ACNE
It’s important to know that when treating acne, it will never magically resolve after 1-2 weeks. Not only is it so important to be consistent with your skin care routine, but it’s important to set realistic expectations. With every type of treatment, give it at least 2-3 months to see results before jumping ship. Hang in there!
